Cut-out matrons will help keep Liverpool hospitals clean

LIFE-SIZE cut-outs of matrons have been installed at a Merseyside Hospital to drum home the “wash your hands” message.

The cardboard photos feature real matrons at University Hospital Aintree, and carry advice on simple hygiene steps for visitors.

They are the latest step in a programme which has seen the creation of a new isolation ward, antibiotic prescribing changes and the installation of new hand-wash stations, amongst other things.

C difficile cases have dropped at the hospital during the last six months – there were 85 cases in December/January, and 29 in April/May.

Chief executive Jim Birrell said: “Our new life-size matron cut-outs will help us to get this message across. They’ll be placed in corridors and near entrances to wards, reminding all staff, patients and visitors to wash their hands.”

The work of staff at the hospital has also been praised by the Health Protection Agency.
