Diver stumbles across baby shark at Blue Planet Aquarium

A DIVER discovered a tiny baby shark during a routine dive in the Blue Planet Aquarium’s giant Caribbean Reef display.

The 3.8m litre display is home to Europe’s largest shark collection, including three-metre-long sand tigers.

The tiny 15cm bamboo shark – who’s been nicknamed Rocky – was found by Terry Cookson during a routine cleaning and maintenance dive.

Exhibits manager Andrea Redfern said: “It’s astonishing the egg hatched and Rocky was able to feed on his egg-sac without being spotted by larger predators in the display.”

Rocky is now in the aquarium’s smaller lagoon display, which is used as a nursery for the smaller shark species.

Bamboo sharks usually live around coral reefs and tidepools.
