Latest round of Merseyside MP expense claims revealed

BELEAGUERED MP for Wirral South Ben Chapman claimed £5.50 for an ice cream scoop and £56.80 for a toilet seat, according to Parliamentary receipts released on-line.

Mr Chapman has already announced he will stand down after it was revealed that he wrongly claimed mortgage interest payments on a second home, despite having paid off the £295,000 mortgage.

These claims saw him pocket £15,000.

But the latest revelations reveal he also enjoyed an expense account life-style that funded a large scale luxury bathroom suite and even the cost of bin bags – £3.95.

The receipts show that Mr Chapman's toilet seat claim was accompanied by another for £19.80 for a loo roll holder.

He also put in receipts for £1,943 for Old Tuscan tiles, as part of an £8,071 bill for building a shower room.

Other claims from August, 2005, to March, 2007, included: £1,229 for a Smeg fridge freezer, £78 for lampshades, £200 for a rug, £149 for a radio, £45 for a lace bedset, £9 for a pack of tea towels and £3.47 for pedal bin liners.

He claimed up to £120 in monthly gardening costs.

Last night Mr Chapman said: “During the period in question, I have received sums for running my London home only as approved by the fees office.

“All such claims for this period will now be subject to an independent review, and of course Sir Christopher Kelly and the Committee on Standards in Public Life is holding an inquiry into the system of expenses and will be making recommendations.”
