MORE than £1m was spent by Wirral Council funding early retirements for its employees last year, according to figures revealed in a new report.
Most of those who took early retirement were working in Adult Social Services and in Children’s Services.
Last night, a council spokeswoman said the early retirements had been due to the restructuring of departments.
A report to the council’s ruling cabinet, which meets next Thursday, said the cost of early retirement for 80 people during 2008-9 was £1,006,900.
Of these, 50 were from Adult Social Services and 22 from Children’s Services.
The remainder came from the Regeneration, Corporate Services and Technical Services departments.
According to the report, by the authority’s director of finance, Ian Coleman: “The costs are exceeded by the savings delivered by the restructuring of services.”
