Clothing calamity

BRITONS are wasting billions of pounds and damaging the environment by throwing away their clothes, according to a study released today.

Instead of recycling used garments, the research found that 63% of people’s clothing ends up in landfill sites where some of it biodegrades to form methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. To mark the start of Recycle Week, the poll called Recycle Now revealed Britons spend £38 billion each year on new clothes, but recycle just 16% of the clothes thrown away.

On average, each UK resident spends around £600 on clothes per year and discards £400 worth, the study found.
