Armed Forces Day replaces Veterans Day

THIS is the first year of Armed Forces Day, which replaces Veterans Day.

More than 200 events will be held nationwide to honour those who serve, or have served, in the Army, Navy or Air Force. That includes both full time and reservist servicemen.

Last year, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) launched the Service Personnel Command Paper to improve support for the forces.

The MoD says that doubled the compensation awarded to injured personnel, improved the forces’ access to public services and established community mental health schemes for veterans.

Veterans minister Kevan (correct) Jones said: "I am so grateful to the people of Merseyside who have organised events in the run up to Armed Forces Day.

"Similar ceremonies will take place at the same time, right across the UK and the world so those serving abroad know the whole country is supporting them.

"It will mean a great deal, particularly to those serving today."
