Armed Forces Day to honour servicemen and women

Armed Forces Day at Liverpool town hall

THEY are our unsung heroes – the thousands of servicemen and women stationed both at home and abroad.

This week our forces personnel will be recognised for the first time with an Armed Forces Day held in their honour.

More than 200 events will be held across the country on Saturday to show support for their efforts.

Liverpool led the way yesterday when Lord Mayor Cllr Mike Storey raised civic flags at the Town Hall.

He said: "Liverpool has always had strong connections with the military, which has been acknowledged over the years by honouring our personnel with the highest honour we can bestow, the Freedom of the City.

"I believe that as a city we should honour all our highly skilled armed forces personnel.

"They are extremely professional people whose bravery helps to protect us and create a safer, more just world.

"I think I speak on behalf of everyone in the city in thanking them for the difficult job they do."

Armed Forces Day is intended to honour both serving personnel and veterans and show they are supported by their fellow citizens.
