Ex Liverpool player John Aldridge supports memorial football match in memory of David Berry

FORMER Liverpool star John Aldridge attended a football tournament held in honour of a sports-mad teenager.

Aldridge joined the parents of David Berry, 17, from Belle Vale, who died suddenly after watching the FA Cup final on May 30.

The match saw his friends from Gateacre Comprehensive face a penalty shoot-out in the David Berry Memorial Cup.

His father Dave, 39, said: "It was fantastic, loads of people turned out and his friends took on a team from the upper sixth, they only lost by one goal. We found out that David died of a heart problem; he had a valve problem since birth and no-one knew.

"It was a ticking time bomb, but I’m glad in a way that we didn’t know because he wouldn’t have been able to go out, play all his sports or see his girlfriend, Ashley.

"We’ve decided to donate all the fundraising to Cardiac Risk in the Young to support their work.

"It’s great that John came and that the school has done so much."
