Firefighters tackle large blaze at Whiston caravan park

FIREFIGHTERS battled to prevent a number of homes from going up in smoke after a fierce blaze broke out at a caravan park in Whiston.

Crews were called to the Halsnead Caravan Park shortly before 11am yesterday.

They found one of the pre-fabricated homes engulfed in flames.

Whiston watch manager Michael Currin said the main priority was to prevent the flames spreading to nearby properties on the estate.

A cluster of large propane gas cylinders were stored outside the blazing home and firefighters doused them with water to stop them exploding.

Mr Currin said: “It was a very successful operation as we saved the other three properties which were threatened by the fire, and nobody got hurt.”

The cylinders are used as an energy supply as there is no mains gas in the area.

The 90-year-old woman who lived in the burning property was pulled to safety by a neighbour and taken to hospital.
