New Liverpool cancer research hub opens

The charity is completely separate from Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology, where is was previously based.

A hospital spokeswoman said it would not affect services there.

However, there are concerns from MPs and campaigners that a wider re-ordering of cancer services will have an negative impact on Clatterbridge.

The charity will retain its offices and administrative team at Bebington.

Chief executive Jane Simpson said: “If we are to tackle these shameful survival rates in our region we must invest.

“We know there is a correlation between the amount of money going into research and one’s prognosis as a cancer patient.

“I am convinced that the more money that is spent on research, the greater are our chances of seeing survival rates improve.

“By moving our research team to Liverpool we can be more effective and pool knowledge and resources with some of the finest scientists.

“Through our focus on genetic research we can also better tailor cancer treatments to the individual.

“It is only by continuing our search for a better understanding of cancer that we can beat it and cure it. ”

The Clatterbridge Cancer Research team will focus on the genetic factors which cause cancer, with the aim of improving individual treatment options and quality of care.
