CIVIC leaders were yesterday sent into their communities to find local heroes suitable for a Royal award.
Dignitaries and councillors were urged to nominate noble volunteers to receive a Queen’s honour.
A grand reception was held at Liverpool Town Hall to promote nominations for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – the only national honour for volunteer groups.
Among the guests were previous Merseyside winners Support for Murder and Manslaughter (Samm).
The Vauxhall-based charity won the accolade in 2005.
Samm development officer John Sandwell said the award was a huge boost to the charity which supports families and people affected by homicides.
He said: “We felt really honoured to receive the award, which is effectively an MBE for all the volunteers.
“It felt like our work had been recognised.
“All our volunteers have lost somebody, through an act of homicide and want to put something back into the group.”
