Armed robber who targeted bookmakers in Halewood was freed by judge to re-offend

AN ARMED robber was freed by a judge to commit another gun-point raid at a bookmakers.

Raymond Cato, 37, was caught after bursting into a William Hill bookmakers on Mackets Lane, Halewood, and threatening pregnant cashier Victoria Mason with a handgun.

Cato and an accomplice escaped with £1,000, but he was arrested that night and an imitation firearm, balaclava and gloves were found in his home.

But when police produced Cato at Liverpool Magistrates Court he was granted bail – despite serving a previous nine-year sentence for holding up a building society and fleeing with £30,000.

Just three weeks after he was freed, Cato, of Shrewton Road, Belle Vale, struck again in a different Halewood betting shop.

Branding Cato a danger to society, Judge Aubrey jailed him indefinitely for public protection.

Cato admitted two counts of robbery on August 4 and September 1, and possessing an imitation firearm and assault.
