Liverpool charity worker in court on sex charges

Police officers pushed leaflets through nearby letterboxes on Sunday saying the “detailed search” of the house may last for a number of days.

Byrne’s city centre-based Young Person’s Advisory Service says it is “committed to supporting young people aged 10 to 25 years in a safe environment”.

Last year, the charity boss featured in Liverpool: Sung & Unsung – a collection of photographs featuring “individuals that best represent the city” and “make decisions which affect the whole city”.

He was one of 86 leading lights in the book and appeared alongside Merseyside Police chief constable Bernard Hogan- Howe, comedian Ken Dodd and Archbishop Patrick Kelly.

The photographic project was bankrolled by Liverpool Culture Company and the North West Regional Development Agency.

Yesterday Byrne, dressed in a checked shirt and tan trousers, spoke only to confirm his name and address during the brief appearance in the magistrates court.

Chairman of the bench John Prior remanded him in custody, and Byrne is due to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on July 16 for a preliminary hearing.
