Railway commuter misery after Merseyrail train derails in 'handbrake' accident

The derailed train in Kirkdale

A TRAIN derailment brought travel chaos to commuters today after a "handbrake" was left off.

Red-faced train bosses are launching an investigation into the accident at the depot in Kirkdale but are working on the assumption that a basic error has disrupted the network for thousands of Merseyside commuters.

No one was injured in the incident at 10.35am this morning.

The three car passenger train was awaiting its next duty when it rolled from the depot with no one on board.

No trains on the Ormskirk and Kirkby main line can pass the train and the disruption is set to last the day.

Rail replacement services are in place between Sandhills and Maghull stations.

Merseyrail spokesman Rudi Boersma said: "The train was in the depot but has rolled to a set of points and derailed and that clearly should not have happened.

"It’s a bit like being in a multi storey car park and forgeting the hand brake and the car rolls against the barrier.
