Merseyside’s hot weather is set to last all week

Summer sun in Liverpool

MERSEYSIDERS had fun in the sun yesterday as Britain braced itself for a heatwave. Thermometers reached a glorious 26C with weather experts predicting more sunshine is on the way.

Merseyside, however, escaped being put on a heat health alert.

But, as high temperatures are due to last for most of the week, medics across the region are still warning people of the dangers of excessive heat.

People are advised to take care when out in the sun, avoid going out in the hottest part of the day and to drink water and use a fan to keep cool.

Meanwhile, health and social workers are on standby to deal with sunstroke and other problems caused by the heat.

Public health director for Liverpool Primary Care Trust, Dr Paula Grey, said: “Although many of us will welcome this warm weather, the heat can be especially dangerous for the very young, older people and those with serious illnesses.

“In particular, it can make heart and respiratory problems worse, and, in extreme cases, excess heat can lead to heat stroke, which can be fatal.”

Forecasters predict Britain could see record-breaking temperatures this week, which prompted Met Office bosses to issue their first Heat-Health Watch warning.
