Arsonists blamed for blaze at Formby Golf Club

Mr Barker urged neighbouring residents to attend a public meeting being held at Ainsdale Centre at 10am on Friday.

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The fire was started deliberately, and dry conditions allowed it to spread to a one-acre area.” Andrew Brockbank, from the National Trust Formby, said: “The problem of country fires is not confined to arsonists.

“A negligent approach to fire safety can have dramatic consequences.

“A family barbecue has the potential to become a significant blaze.

“The National Trust prohibits fires and works closely with police to prosecute arsonists.”

Formby is one of the oldest links courses in the country, having been founded in 1884.

It hosted the Curtis Cup in 2004 and last month was the scene for the Amateur Championship, which was won by 16-year-old Matteo Manassero.
