£7m flood pipe work on course to stop Huyton flooding misery

WATER company United Utilities said it was on schedule to finish work on a major pipe scheme after thousands of households in Huyton suffered flooding misery.
The £7m project involves renewing an old cast-iron water pipe in Liverpool Road.
This has burst on two previous occasions – in December, 2007, and February last year.
Torrents of water gushed into people’s homes on both occasions, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to people’s property and possessions.
Construction work on the new main began last October and is due to be finished by the end of this year.
Mark Tait, a water technical officer for United Utilities, said: “We saw first-hand the difficulties faced by the families who were flooded in 2007 and last year, and we’ve been totally committed to working as quickly and efficiently as we can to repair the pipe and reduce the risk of something like this happening again.
“Given the size of the pipe, this has been a complex engineering job, but I’m pleased to say that we’re on schedule and doing all we can to continue to keep disruption levels to a minimum.”
