Doorstep peddling ‘must be banned’

ENERGY companies must be banned from peddling their products on doorsteps, trading standards chiefs said.

Members of the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) said there was mounting evidence that pushy gas and electricity salesmen were preying on vulnerable householders.

They want European legislation to be altered to ban the unpopular practice of encouraging people to switch suppliers at their homes.

The TSI said officials across England and Wales had reported cases of elderly and vulnerable people changing their energy supply against their better judgment.

The call to ban doorstep tradesmen is supported by the National Pensioners Convention (NPC), which represents 1.5m elderly people.
