FIREFIGHTERS took to the waves yesterday to come to the aid of a stricken gosling which had become separated from its parents.
Merseyside Fire Service’s Marine rescue boat was scrambled after witnesses saw the tiny Canada Goose, just weeks old, fall 30 feet from its nest at the old cattle sheds to the north of the Cruise Liner Terminal.
Problems accessing the area of the shore meant it was a job too big for the RSPCA, which quickly handed over responsibilities to team leader Steve Carder, and crewmen Les Moulsdale and Kev Farnan.
Steve Carder said: “When we got there the bird’s mother had come down to try and help it, it looked like it had an injured leg.”
The crew worked in full body dry suits and sweltering temperatures as they tried to get the bird to safety.
