25% of Wirral teens drink more than twice a week

Alan Autey, Trading Standards manager for Liverpool, said the city’s figures were encouraging, but added too many youngsters were drinking.

The city’s figures do remain relatively high for the amount of teens buying alcohol, but they have dropped.

He said: “It shows the work we have been doing over the last few years is really having an effect.

“Fewer children are accessing alcohol now.

“But often others will buy it for them.

“This can be older siblings, friends, or even parents.

“A lot of premises now operate an over-25 ID policy, because there are harsher consequences if we find they are selling to under-18s.

“There are obvious health concerns with under-age drinking, but drunk teenagers also put themselves in situations that even adults have trouble dealing with when they are drunk.

“It is very dangerous, and we still have a lot of work to do.”
