Liverpool FC fan Michael Shields – four years of waiting

MAY 29, 2005: Martin Georgiev is attacked with a paving slab in Golden Sands, Bulgaria.

May 30: Michael Shields arrested.

June 14: Three witnesses fly to Bulgaria to sign sworn statements protesting Michael's innocence.

June 27: Michael charged with attempted murder and hooliganism.

July 26: Michael convicted and jailed for 15 years.

April, 2006: Michael’s bid for a retrial fails.

November: Michael flown to Heathrow, to be transferred to Wandsworth Prison.

May, 2008: Michael transferred to low-security HMP Haverigg, in Cumbria.

September 2: Jack Straw said he has done more for Michael than for anyone in his predicament, but he does not believe he has the jurisdiction to release him.

December 1: LFC stars wear “Free Michael Shields” T-shirts before match against West Ham.

December 18: High Court decides Jack Straw has the power to grant Michael a Royal Pardon.

February 25, 2009: Michael is allowed out of his open prison for the day.

February 27: Jack Straw asks Merseyside Police to look at Michael’s case.

April 9: Hundreds march in Liverpool city centre for Michael’s freedom.

July 2: Jack Straw refuses to recommend a Royal Pardon.
