Liverpool Blue Coat School’s future in limbo due to government ruling delay

The school has pointed out that “having a chapel does not make us a Church of England school.”

And school trustee Anthony Shone said the position over the “unfortunate business” had not changed.

“I never really understood the rationale behind it. It seemed a very thin issue to me.

“The feeling was, if it’s not broken don’t mend it and I totally maintain that. We are a multi-faith organisation and that is part of our strength.”

Liverpool council has backed the governors’ stance, fearing a church takeover would be “discriminatory” towards its large multi-faith pupil population.

Last night, Tim Warren, assistant executive director for education at Liverpool council, said the lack of action was a “very encouraging position”.

A Diocese spokesman said: “We are happy to wait and are happy to abide with the decision.”
