THE keel of Cunard’s new superliner, the 92,000-tonne Queen Elizabeth, has been laid in a ceremony in Italy.
The 2,092-passenger ship is being constructed at the Fincantieri shipyard, near Trieste, and the liner will enter service in October next year.
The ceremony involved the placement in a dry dock of the first section of the ship’s hull, with the vessel taking to the water for the first time in December this year before being delivered to Cunard.
With the QE2 now out of service and becoming a floating hotel in Dubai, the new Queen Elizabeth will be a sister ship to Cunard’s Queen Victoria, which was also built at the Fincantieri yard.
