PARENTS in Kirkby were left wondering if their children would be able to return to school, after a second pile of grenades were dug up in a week.
Children were evacuated from Ruffwood School, Roughwood Drive, Kirkby, at around noon yesterday when two WWII white phosphorous bombs, probably made by the Royal Ordnance munitions department more than 60 years ago, were discovered by workers at a nearby Balfour Beatty building site.
It was the second cache discovered after 20 of the bombs were found and made safe on Wednesday.
Derek McGeagh, whose daughter, Renae, is a pupil of Ruffwood school, said: “I saw the workmen come out and go home and then Renae came home about 12.45pm with a letter from school saying incendiary devices had been found.
“Now I don’t know whether she’s in school or not tomorrow.
“The school does have their welfare at heart. They kept them indoors when they heard about the bombs.”
It is understood the bombs were being made safe last night, and children would be able to return to lessons today.
