U-turn on allotment

A COMMUNITY council which threatened to take an allotment away from an 89-year-old woman because she was growing flowers instead of vegetables has done a U-turn, the widow has said.

Edith Avery was initially told by Rogerstone Community Council, near Newport, South Wales, that the plot she had tended for 30 years, just a few feet from her back door, would be cleared because she had not complied with regulations.

But following media coverage and pressure from her local MP Paul Flynn, Mrs Avery said the council, which met on Wednesday night to discuss the issue, had changed its mind.
