Conductor Vasily Petrenko and artistic director Jude Kelly are among those receiving honorary degrees from Liverpool University

The pair are two of 10 luminaries in different fields who will be honoured by the university this year.

Nobel Prize-winning Prof Sir John Sulston, who was awarded the top prize in physiology and medicine for the discovery of genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death, will become an honorary Doctor of Science.

Also being awarded honorary doctorates at university ceremonies at the Philharmonic Hall next week, in which 4,000 students will graduate, are:

Echo Arena architect Jim Eyre OBE; former city council chief executive Peter Bounds; former keeper of art galleries for Museums and Galleries on Merseyside Julian Treuherz; the Chinese shipping tycoon and chief executive of Hong Kong, Tung Chee-Chen; political philosopher Lord Bhikhu Parekh; leading international scientist Prof Bernard Raveau; and Prof Dame Sally Davies, director general of research and development and chief scientific advisor for the Department of Health.
