Firefighters evacuate 500 Liverpool residents after gas cylinders found near fire

HUNDREDS of people were allowed to return to homes they evacuated in Toxteth.

Firefighters emptied 500 houses after finding gas cylinders in a tyre fire on Beaumont Street at 4.30pm on Friday.

Most stayed with friends and family but others spent the night at the Austin Rawlinson Sports Centre in Conleach Road, Speke.

The British Red Cross provided food, drink and blankets for the evacuees who all lived within 250m on the fire.

They returned home on Saturday morning.

Merseyside Police superintendent Mike Martin thanked the residents for their patience.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
