954 offenders still at large

ALMOST 1,000 criminals who should have been returned to prison because they breached terms of their release are still at large, new figures show.

The Ministry of Justice said 954 offenders recalled before March this year had not been returned to jail by the end of last month.

This included 72 robbers, 19 murderers and 12 rapists.

There are still some offenders recalled to custody up to 25 years ago still on the run.

It is the first time data on offenders not returned to custody has been released.
