First Daily Post summer steam train flagged off from Liverpool Lime Street

THE departure of the first Daily Post summer steam train from Liverpool was more than just academic.

Flagging it off from Lime Street was Sir Howard Newby, vice-chancellor of Liverpool University and a serious rail fan.

Sir Howard is chairman of the National Railway Museum Advisory Board and acting deputy chairman of the Railway Heritage Committee.

The Coast to Coast Express, nicknamed the “Scarborough Flyer”, was hauled by the mighty Princess Royal Pacific steam locomotive, Princess Elizabeth.

The 1933 Crewe-built, record-breaking engine, formerly based at Edge Hill Shed, pulled the train faultlessly on its 300-mile trip to Scarborough and back.

The fully-booked train carried 440 passengers, with many enjoying Premier Class dining with full English breakfast, lunch and a four-course dinner.

Sir Howard said: “I am delighted to send off this magnificent train. It is terrific to see steam again at Lime Street.”
