Four saved from rising New Brighton beach tide

FOUR people had to be saved from advancing tides when they walked up to a quarter of a mile onto New Brighton beach.

The group were spotted by a concerned walker at around 6.53pm last night and the coastguard scrambled to the scene.

It took nearly an hour to guide the walkers in after the tide began to fill up gullies behind them.

Walkers can be taken unawares when high sandbanks turn to islands. A coastguard spokesman said: "High tide is at 11.50pm, but because they were so far out and the gullies fill up quickly it would have come in a lot faster for them.

"If it wasn’t for the warning, they could have been in a lot more danger."
