Makin’s delight at Liverpool Law Society Lifetime Achievement Award

STALWART Liverpool lawyer Rex Makin described receiving a top award from Liverpool Law Society as “pleasing and “gratifying” last night.

Mr Makin, who celebrated 60 years practising law in Merseyside in January, was honoured by the society at its Legal Awards ceremony.

Society president Charlie Jones announced he was to be given a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr Makin will collect the gong at the society’s annual general meeting in November.

Mr Makin, founding partner of Whitechapel-based E Rex Makin & co, said: “I was quite surprised to receive it – no notice was given to me beforehand.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’ve never been an establishment man, and I might be described as an iconoclast, a non-establishment man.

“But it’s very pleasing and gratifying to receive this mark of recognition, even though it was belated.”

Mr Makin was accepted on to the roll in 1949.

He acted for Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein, singer Gerry Marsden and broadcaster Anne Robinson – as well as in dozens of high- profile criminal cases.

He added: “I’m still in my office every day from 9am to 4pm and have been writing my Echo column for 16 years, which has the occasional tilt at the legal establishment.”
