Shakespeare brought to life in outdoor production of The Merchant Of Venice

St Catherine's Priory in Lydiate plays host to Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice

TALES of the Bard were brought to life in a sold-out production of The Merchant of Venice.

Dean Taylor Productions staged its outdoor version of the Shakespeare classic – which coined the phrase “all that glitters is not gold” – at St Catherine’s Priory, in Lydiate, near Maghull.

It was the sixth time the company performed at the picturesque Priory, and Dean Taylor, who runs the company, said it always enjoyed a good reception. He also said, despite Shakespeare’s prose being more than 400 years old – The Merchant of Venice was written between 1596 and 159 – it still has an enduring appeal.

He said: “He uses timeless themes about the human condition, which never changes.

“If you went back 200 years, the problems and anxieties would be the same.”

The Preston-based production company tours with different plays, but Mr Taylor said it enjoyed bringing Shakespeare outdoors to ordinary people – the audience Shakespeare was aiming for.
