WIRRAL Council could soon back calls to save legendary Spitfire hangars from ruin.
The home of 610 Squadron, at Hooton Airfield, lies outside of the peninsula, but a new motion seeks to recognise the brave pilots from across Wirral that made a key contribution to the Battle of Britain.
The 1920s-designed “Belfast Hangars” at Hooton have been slowly crumbling, but The Hooton Park Trust has set to work on one, having received funding from English Heritage.
Now, Wirral councillor Jerry Williams is calling on the council to formally back the campaign to restore the site in a motion to be heard on July 13.
He said: “It’s a matter of honour that Wirral recognises its exceptional links with this RAF squadron which has such an important history. We have to highlight these connections, not let the last symbols of it fall into ruin.
“It is one of the most famous of the Battle of Britain squadrons, founded in the 1930s, when we were rearming because of Hitler, increasing the number of pilots and aircrew as we had to match the Luftwaffe.
