Liverpool slow to back organ donation

LESS than 20% of people in Liverpool have signed up to donate their organs.

At the start of National Transplant Week, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has published a map showing the percentage of the UK population who have signed up to the NHS organ donor register.

The national average is 27%, but no Merseyside borough has reached this level.

In Sefton, 24.4% have signed up, in Wirral 23.4% and in Halton and St Helens 19.2%.

Liverpool and Knowsley’s figures are even lower, at 18.7% and 15.2% respectively.

Sally Johnson, of NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “If we are to meet the growing need for organs across the UK, we really need more people to sign up as organ donors.”
