Wirral council leader calls for all councillors’ expenses to be made public

Cllr Foulkes’s motion, to be considered at Wallasey town hall, suggests Wirral’s councillors have been frugal in their approach to allowances, with an increase of just 1.9% in five years, and that they do not have access to a pension fund.

Cllr Foulkes added: “The increase over five years compares very favourably with MPs and public sector pay.

“They are legitimate allowances and we are not talking about trouser presses. We cannot let the behaviour of others cast a shadow over local government.”

The motion is set to go before a full meeting of Wirral Council on July 13.

Meanwhile, all MPs have been invited by HM Revenue and Customs to discuss their tax affairs with officials in the wake of the revelations about their expenses, it was disclosed last night.

Dave Hartnett, the department’s permanent secretary for tax, also signalled several would be required to discuss their position following the public disclosures.

The recent expenses scandal has thrown up questions not only about MPs’ publicly-funded claims, but also about their failure to pay tax in certain areas.
