Liverpool election fraud councillor escapes second vote of no confidence

DISGRACED city councilor Steve Hurst narrowly avoided a second move to have him thrown off Liverpool council over his conviction for election fraud.

The Labour group last night proposed a motion seeking that the Wavertree member either stand down or be sacked.

Cllr Hurst was found guilty of the charge, held up at a second hearing earlier this year, of distributing leaflets smearing a rival Labour councillor and her husband.

Labour group leader Cllr Joe Anderson told last night’s heated full council meeting: “Cllr Hurst brings considerable discredit to politics, and his own party, at a time when politicians are in the spotlight.”

He added: “This council has to have a view on whether convicted criminals, convicted of serious crimes while in office should be able to continue to represent the people.”

Cllr Hurst had given his apologies prior to the meeting for being unable to attend, but arrived in the chamber moments before the vote on whether the Labour motion should be debated.
