LIVERPOOL’S Lord Mayor has urged the city to don their mop-tops and get involved in Beatles Day.

A day of Fab Four activities is taking place to celebrate The Beatles’ victorious return to their home city following their conquering of America in 1964.

Organisers hope the event, the second annual Beatles Day, will raise thousands for charity.

Lord Mayor Mike Storey is getting involved in the fun and urged others to buy fund-raising mop-top wigs and get out and about in the city.

He said: “I am delighted to get involved in this year’s Beatles Day.

“Apart from the fact The Beatles are such a major part of our Liverpool’s wonderful musical and cultural heritage, the day also supports some fantastic charities.

“I will be getting out and about on the ferry, and we will be recreating the famous mop-top scene on the town hall balcony later on.

“I would urge everyone to don their mop-tops and support Beatles Day 2009 and show how the city can have a great time.”

The day includes seven hours of live music in Liverpool city centre, live art at Cavern Walks ,and Beatles’ inspired walking tours.

Beatles tribute band The Shakers will be playing at the 08 Place at 11.30am and 2pm, while George Harrison’s former ukelele teacher Ray Bernard will perform at the same venue at 1pm. It culminates tonight in a Beatles Day concert at the ECHO arena featuring the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Merseyside music stars including The Farm, Dennis Locorriere and Connie Lush. Beatles Day patron Ricky Tomlinson, who is compering the Arena event, said: “I am over the moon to be hosting the concert again.

“I’m particularly looking forward to the Liverpool Ukulele Orchestra, and it will be one of the highlights of my year.”

Money raised from this year’s event will go to the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal and the Marina Dalglish Appeal.
