PEOPLE are turning to drink after retirement despite the risks to their health, a new poll out today suggests.
The survey of more than 800 people over the age of 60 found 13% said they drink more since they retired.
Of these, almost one in five (19%) drink alcohol because they are depressed, while 13% drink to deal with bereavement.
More than one in 10 (12%) said they most often drink when they are alone.
The London-based alcohol and drug charity, Foundation66, said there was an epidemic of “late onset” alcohol misuse among over-60s.
The number ending up in hospital as a result is on the rise.
