CROSBY pupils are officially the brainiest in the country, after Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School was crowned UK quiz champions.
The school lifted the junior title at the UK’s National Schools’ General Knowledge Quiz Championship.
Pupils from Merchants beat Magdalen College School, in Oxford, 860 to 550, in a one- sided final.
The winner of the 2007 Junior Mastermind, David Verghese, led the six-strong team.
Kieran Morris, 13, from Whiston, who produced a phenomenal series of answers on a special section on the X Factor, said: “David is obviously the front man, but even David doesn't know everything, and he’s perhaps not as good on quirkier types of general knowledge.²
The quiz is modelled on the University Challenge format, and attracts entrants from top British schools.
Master in charge Phil Lally, said: “I do little more than drive them around the country. They arrange their own practices and even select their own team.”
