A MERSEYSIDE school ensured its Zambian-themed day was as authentic as possible by inviting one of the country’s leading dignitaries to lunch.
Rejoice Lukumba, a press secretary for Zambia’s High Commissioner, His Excellency Anderson Chibwa, was the guest of honour at St Benedict’s College, in Garston.
His visit was part of a day of Zambia-themed activities which saw students take part in Zambian dance, cooking, music, language and culture.
The aim was to educate the pupils about Zambia’s culture and promote the work of the Thembinkosi Foundation, set up by teachers at St Benedict’s and other schools in Liverpool to build and sustain a school in Zambia.
Firms which donated to the Foundation were presented with special certificates. Pupils finished off with live African drumming, and Zambian women living in Liverpool performed traditional dance.
Will Doran, head of religious education and a Foundation founder, said: “I’m deeply proud of our pupils’ willingness to support children half a world away.”
