Sea cadets handed Freedom of the City of Liverpool

OVER 300 uniformed sea cadets took part in a formal parade before being handed the Freedom of the City yesterday.

The youngsters stood proud despite torrential rain as the Lord Mayor inspected them.

It is the first time a cadet company has been granted the freedom of a British city.

The Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet and North West Navy Board Cadet Beverley Marriett said: “We were all really excited and happy about receiving the award. We have all worked really hard doing charity nights and during the city’s Capital of Culture year.”

The 16-year-old, from Huyton, plans to attend the British Royal Navy College and join the Navy. She added: “The honour is really good for the cadets. It will give the younger cadets more motivation to be involved”.

Lord Mayor Cllr Mike Storey said: “The Sea Cadets are one of the largest young peoples groups on Merseyside and have made a tremendous contribution to the city over the years.

“It is right that they are recognised.”
