Pressure mounts to reopen hospital’s children’s A&E
PRESSURE was mounting last night on local health services to re-instate the children’s A&E in Southport, following the death of a four-day-old baby boy this week.
Local campaigners and concerned parents are demanding children’s health services return to the town after the ambulance transporting the child who died was sent to Ormskirk hospital.
Campaigners include Southport taxi drivers who are staging a protest on Sunday afternoon.
They will be driving in convoy from Southport hospital to Ormskirk and back, to highlight the need for a children’s A&E department in the town.
Organiser Steve Richards said: “I think it is disgusting we don’t have children’s A&E facilities in Southport.
“I have three young children and I wouldn’t want their lives put in danger by such an issue.
“So far, I have got around 40 taxi drivers coming along to the protest on Sunday at 4pm.”
Margaret Brown, of the community campaigning group CARES, added: “The situation has been a tragedy waiting to happen, and it has taken the death of a baby to bring the issue to light again.
“My heart goes out to the family.”
