Pat Smith added: “I used two different types of willow for the weaving and held an introductory class for the children.
“They all really embraced what they were doing and seemed to enjoy working with their hands. It was great for me to see these modern children learning a traditional skill.”
The original Stephenson Rocket was designed and built to compete in the Rainhill Trials, a competition to select the locomotive type for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, on October 6 to 14 1829. All of the other competitors broke down and Rocket was declared the winner.
Mrs Wilkinson, Head Teacher at St Ann’s, said: “As well as providing an interesting focus for the sensory garden that is to come, the Wicker Rocket adds something to Rainhill as a whole by reflecting the important role it played in hosting the trials and the impact that these had historically.
“It will also help our children to appreciate their local heritage as they enjoy the new garden.”
