WEST Lancashire Borough Council has announced it is cutting 57 jobs to balance the books during the recession.
The authority has agreed a £1.5m package of spending reductions because of cuts in funding in the public sector.
The job losses will be a mixture of full and part-time posts.
The figures include a number of positions that are already vacant.
Council chiefs said they believe the final number of staff at risk of redundancy is expected to be far lower due to redeployment, the non-filling of vacant posts and the ending of temporary and agency staff contracts.
Full consultation has been held with relevant trade unions.
West Lancashire Council leader Ian Grant said: “We deeply regret having to take these steps.
“However, the current dire economic situation has given us no choice.”
