AN ESTIMATED £140m of errors by the armed forces’ payroll system led yesterday to the Ministry of Defence’s accounts being “qualified” by Whitehall auditors.
The National Audit Office (NAO) found that almost 15% of the payments made through the controversial Joint Personnel Administration (JPA) contained errors or could not be substantiated.
The NAO estimated that the problems with JPA – which handles the pay and allowances of 191,000 service personnel – had resulted in net errors totalling £140m.
It pointed to the limited checks which were carried out once data had been entered.
