Pleas for asbestos cancer victim’s colleagues

RELATIVES and solicitors acting for a cancer victim are urging his former colleagues to come forward with information about his exposure to asbestos.

Billy Hughes, 81, died of asbestos-related lung cancer in January after a 20-year career at Liverpool’s docks. He worked there from 1957 to 1977.

His son David and the legal team at Thompsons Solicitors are gathering information about working conditions in the docks at that time.

David Hughes said: “My dad talked to colleagues a lot about his condition and wanted to claim compensation. He was the main carer for my mum and wanted to make sure she was looked after.”

Billy, of Norris Green, started off as a deck hand and was a crane driver when he left the docks.

He was known as the “birdman” because of his hobby breeding budgies.

Anyone with information should phone Joanne Candlish at Thompsons, on 0151 224 1644.
