Time on his hands as new Dr Who gives an extra dimension to TV role

THE new Doctor Who star, Matt Smith, made his first appearance as the Time Lord yesterday, sporting a preppy look in tweed jacket and bow tie.

The new bookish style marks a change in sartorial direction for the Doctor, after David Tennant’s sharp suits and baseball boots.

Smith’s old-fashioned look – complemented by black boots and rolled-up trouser legs – has echoes of Patrick Troughton, who wore a floppy bow tie when he played the second Doctor in the late 1960s.

Accompanying the time traveller on his latest adventures is new companion Amy Pond, played by flame-haired Scottish actress Karen Gillan.

Arriving in Cardiff to begin filming, Smith, 26, said he was thrilled to be playing the 11th incarnation of the Time Lord.

“I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show,” he said.

“The scripts are brilliant and working alongside Karen and the rest of the crew is an inspiration because their work ethic and passion for the show is so admirable.”

The 13-episode series is due to air next spring, and will follow three Doctor Who specials with David Tennant later this year.
