£1m boost for Chester centre

A £1M scheme to give Chester a boost has been launched.

Divided into three phases, Operation Face-lift aims to improve the appearance, environment and safety of one of England’s leading tourist and shopping destinations.

It will see more police patrols during the summer, increased CCTV coverage and a clean-up of the streets.

Š Cllr Lynn Riley, Cheshire West and Chester Council executive member for Communities, said: “The public have told us what they want to see happen with regard to Chester city centre and we have produced a response which will make a lasting difference.”

Cllr Neil Ritchie, executive member for Environment, said: “Chester’s face is its fortune and we want to ensure it looks its best to compete with our tourism and retail sectors.” A cleaning team will be complemented by a dedicated enforcement officer targeting problems like litter, fly posting and graffiti and a Rows caretaker will liaise with traders on the appearance of the shopping galleries.
