Merseyside soldiers’ courage under fire from Taliban

TWO Merseyside soldiers braved a hail of fire in a Taliban ambush to save an injured comrade.

Rifleman Warren Richardson, 23, from Huyton, Rifleman Nathan Hau, 18, from Childwall, and Corporal Daniel ‘Faz’ Farrell, 24, from Kirkby, were patrolling Afghanistan’s Upper Sangin Valley when they came under attack.

The three servicemen from the 2nd Battalion the Rifles, who are described as “a band of brothers”, were trying to cross a field in an area that had already seen five British soldiers killed by enemy action in a week.

A bullet ripped into Warren’s leg, tearing bone and nerves leaving him flat out and in mortal danger.

At first his fellow soldiers believed he had merely fallen over but when the gravity of the situation hit home section commander Daniel grabbed 18-year-old Nathan and ran back in to help.

They dragged Warren 30 metres to safety behind a low mud wall.

As Warren received treatment Daniel led a counter attack which drove off the Taliban under a barrage of rifle fire and rocket propelled missiles -actually being hit himself.
