Military funeral for oldest survivor

A MAN who was Britain’s oldest surviving First World War veteran and the world’s oldest man will receive a public funeral with military honours, the Ministry of Defence announced.

Henry Allingham died peacefully at St Dunstan’s care home for blind ex-service personnel in Ovingdean, near Brighton, East Sussex on Saturday, aged 113.

Mr Allingham joined the Royal Naval Air Service in September 1915 before transferring to the RAF in April 1918 and was the last survivor of the Battle of Jutland.

The Guinness World Records confirmed he was the world’s oldest man after the previous holder, Tomoji Tanabe, died aged 113.

The Ministry of Defence said his funeral would take place at St Nicholas Church, Brighton, at midday on July 30 but reminded members of the public wishing to pay their respects that space within the church would be limited.

A spokesman said: “The funeral will be attended by his family, who will be travelling from America and representatives of HM Government Armed Forces.
